Episode 8: Read My Skirt - Part 3
Part 3 of 3. Using up my scraps of muslin, leftover from designing new pieces. Rather than toss them away, I have been creating garments to actually wear. This ensemble was all about journaling, writing words and thoughts on pieces. Then taking those pieces to the mannequin to drape an original design.
As I was cleaning up after finishing this piece, sweeping up the teeny pieces of muslin scattered all over the studio floor, I had another idea. Just start stitching them together, see what happens. Nothing particular in mind, just experimenting. Trying new-to-me techniques. A little ruching here, adding strips into the seams, gathering, etc. etc. It might become a shawl or neck adornment at some point. I cape would be interesting.
The hem on the skirt was a highlight for me. I dig the details. Making 8 yards of bias, writing on 8 yards of bias, and binding the bottom of the skirt, it felt complete. That’s another part of my process, knowing when it is finished. I keep going until that time presents itself to me.
The End.
